An aWESOME CINEMATIC experience

Saturday 21st of February, the Alliance Française Port Harcourt collaborated with Art in the Garden City, to hosted the Lace Relations, the featured movie of the month from DocuScreenNG.

The film examines the historical, cultural, and social significance of lace fabric within Nigerian society. Through personal narratives, expert insights, and archival references, it traces how lace once associated with colonial trade and European fashion—became deeply embedded in local identity, status expression, and ceremonial life. The documentary further explores themes of class, gender, and cultural adaptation, highlighting how lace functions not only as a textile but also as a symbol of prestige, belonging, and evolving tradition. By situating everyday fashion within broader historical and social contexts, Lace Relations offers a reflective look at how material culture shapes social relationships in contemporary Nigeria.

As is customary after each screening, a moderated discussion session followed the viewing, enabling attendees to share impressions, ask questions, and engage in thoughtful dialogue inspired by the film. The exchange reflected diverse perspectives and encouraged deeper reflection on the subject matter.

Overall, the activity provided a valuable platform for cultural engagement and intellectual exchange, in line with Alliance Française Port Harcourt’s commitment to promoting documentary cinema and fostering informed conversations within the community.
