Saturday 20 June the Alliance Française de Port Harcourt opens its doors to celebrate it. Born in France in 1982 and now marked in more than a hundred countries, World Music Day, known in French as the Fête de la Musique, turns the start of summer into a worldwide celebration of sound, where professionals and emerging talents share the same stage and the same audience.
This year, we are bringing that spirit to Port Harcourt with a free concert built around four acts that capture the energy and diversity of the local music scene. From Afro-soul to reggae, dancehall and live band performance, the evening is a snapshot of how rich and varied contemporary African music has become.
We begin at 5pm with a screening of Elder’s Corner, a documentary by Siji Awoyinka that traces the history of Nigerian music through the voices of the pioneers who shaped it. From juju and highlife to Afrobeat, the film follows a journey back to Lagos to meet the artists who built the soundtrack of a nation, and weaves their stories into Nigeria’s own social and political history. It is a fitting way to open a day dedicated to music, reminding us where so much of today’s sound comes from.
This screening is part of a shared programme carried out across the French cultural network in nigeria, with the support of the Embassy of France in Nigeria and the coordination of the Institut français du Nigeria.
