On March 8th, the Alliance Française in Port Harcourt celebrated International Women’s Day with a focus on women in science. The event was organized by the French cultural network in Nigeria with the aim of raising awareness about the contribution of women scientists to society.
The day began with the screening of several episodes of the animated series “Les Culottés”, which highlight known and unknown women scientists who dared to break stereotypes and change the world in their own way. Schoolchildren then enjoyed a guided tour of the exhibition “Women in Science”, which featured portraits of 10 French and African women who have contributed to global scientific development.
In the afternoon, Alliance students and the general public were invited to attend the screening of three short documentary films entitled “Vues d’Afrique / Les Hauts-Parleurs”. These films addressed the theme of women in the scientific field and were followed by a French quiz on the content of the “Women in Science” exhibition.
Finally, it is important to note that the Alliance Française in Port Harcourt chose to rename its classrooms in tribute to African women scientists. This initiative highlighted the contribution of women to science and reminded us of their essential role in research and innovation.

Le 8 mars dernier, l’Alliance Française de Port Harcourt a célébré la Journée internationale des droits des femmes avec une thématique centrée sur les femmes en sciences. Cet événement a été organisé par le réseau culturel français au Nigéria, dans le but de sensibiliser le public à la contribution des femmes scientifiques à la société.
La journée a débuté avec la projection de quelques épisodes de la série animée “Les Culottés”, qui mettent en lumière des femmes scientifiques connues ou inconnues qui ont osé briser les stéréotypes et ont changé le monde à leur manière. Les écoliers ont ensuite bénéficié d’une visite guidée de l’exposition “Femmes en science”, qui présentait le portrait de 10 femmes françaises et africaines ayant contribué au développement scientifique mondial.
L’après-midi, les étudiants de l’Alliance et le public extérieur ont été invités à assister à la projection de trois courts métrages documentaires intitulés “Vues d’Afrique / Les Hauts-Parleurs”. Ces films ont abordé le thème des femmes dans le domaine scientifique et ont été suivis d’un quizz en français sur le contenu de l’exposition “Femmes en science”.
Enfin, il est important de souligner que l’Alliance Française de Port Harcourt a choisi de renommer ses salles de cours en hommage aux femmes scientifiques africaines. Cette initiative a permis de mettre en avant la contribution des femmes à la science et de rappeler leur rôle essentiel dans la recherche et l’innovation.
En résumé, la Journée internationale des droits des femmes à l’Alliance Française de Port Harcourt a été une réussite, en sensibilisant le public à la contribution des femmes scientifiques et en célébrant leur rôle dans la société. Les projections de films et l’exposition ont permis de découvrir des portraits inspirants de femmes qui ont su surmonter les obstacles pour faire avancer la science. Join us for a celebration of International Women’s Day at Alliance Française Port Harcourt on March 8th! This year’s theme is “Women in Science,” and we’re highlighting the groundbreaking contributions of women scientists from around the world.
We’ll be screening four short films that showcase incredible women in science, including a Moroccan engineer using AI to improve urban mobility, an infectious disease specialist in Uganda, and a young Nigerian coder addressing polio in her community. Plus, we’ll be sharing inspiring biographical stories of women from the past and present in Les Culottées / Brazen.
This event is in partnership with the Embassy of France in Nigeria and Institut français du Nigeria, and the portraits were created by the French National Federative Association of Scientific University Students (AFNEUS). The short films were provided by Universcience – Cité des sciences et de l’industrie, Paris, France; Girls Voices Initiative, Nigeria; and Institut Français.
The event is free and open to everyone, so bring your friends and family and join us from 1pm to 3pm. And if you can’t make it on the day, don’t worry – the exhibition will be on display in the hall of Alliance Française Port Harcourt from March 8th to 17th.
