An Exhibition at Alliance Française Port Harcourt for Women’s Month

Throughout the month of March, the Alliance Française Port Harcourt is pleased to present the exhibition “Acting for Women, Shaping the Future”, organized in celebration of the International Women’s Day and the wider Women’s Month, observed in Nigeria and around the world.

This interactive exhibition showcases the impact of the FEF-CSO programme, a project led by the French Embassy in Nigeria to support 21 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) working across 16 states in Nigeria. Through photographs, stories, and interactive content, visitors will discover initiatives dedicated to women’s empowerment, social inclusion, and conflict prevention.

By highlighting these initiatives, the exhibition emphasizes the importance of promoting women’s rights, recognizing women’s contributions to society, and continuing collective efforts toward gender equality and sustainable peace.

Discover the People Behind the Projects

The exhibition features 21 portraits, each paired with a Nigerian traditional fabric chosen by the partner Civil Society Organization involved in the project. Visitors are invited to explore the exhibition panels, scan interactive content, and discover the people and initiatives behind these inspiring projects.

The textiles displayed throughout the exhibition tell their own story. Each fabric reflects the cultural identity and traditions of the regions where these initiatives were implemented.

The Fabric of Diversity

From the deep indigo Adire textiles of the Southwest to the structured geometric patterns of Atamfa cloth and the vibrant colours of Isi-Agu, the diversity of the fabrics displayed mirrors the cultural richness of Nigeria.

Each thread, dye, and pattern represents the identity and strength of the communities reached by these projects. This diversity reminds us that sustainable solutions must be rooted in local contexts, and that cultural richness is one of Nigeria’s greatest strengths.

Weaving Partnerships

The ancient craft of Nigerian weaving offers a powerful metaphor for development work. A single thread is fragile, just as an individual facing exclusion or hardship may struggle alone. Sustainable change requires cooperation, patience, and structure.

In weaving, horizontal threads interlace with vertical ones to create a strong and lasting textile. In the same way, the work of Civil Society Organizations providing training, support, or legal assistance intertwines with the trust, resilience, and cultural knowledge of communities. Together, they create lasting impact.

A Symbol of Resilience

The finished fabric represents the strength that emerges from collaboration. Stronger than the sum of its individual threads, it symbolizes restored dignity, improved livelihoods, and renewed potential within communities.

By selecting these textiles, the partner organisations affirm that the solutions they implement are authentically Nigerian, woven into the cultural and social fabric of the communities they serve.

Educational Activities in French

Visitors will also have the opportunity to participate in French-language educational activities designed to strengthen language skills while exploring the themes of the exhibition.

The Alliance Française Port Harcourt warmly invites the public to visit the exhibition “Acting for Women, Shaping the Future” and discover the inspiring stories of the women, communities, and organisations working to shape a more inclusive and equitable future.
